Getting Started

It’s taken me awhile to get my first blog article written.  As with many things I want to do, like learning to play the guitar or getting into a regular exercise routine or cleaning out some boxes in the attic, it’s a matter of getting started.  Sometimes we need the motivation, the tools, the time or even a buddy to join us.  When I first attempted to write this article, I had the motivation, the tools, the time and my buddy Bob’s blog articles to get me going but my head kept getting in the way.  It occurred to me that what we learn about Reiki is to let our ego and personality step aside, learn not to be attached to the outcome and just let the energy flow to where it needs to go and thus, my words started to flow.

The interest in Reiki continues to grow as more people become aware of the healing  benefits it provides, sometimes by seeing a Reiki demonstration, reading an article or surfing the internet, experiencing the results of a first treatment session, being introduced to it from a friend, or by seeking an alternative healing technique for themselves or a loved one.  In 1995, I was fortunate to have been introduced to Reiki by my wonderful Huna teacher and also Reiki Master, Loretta Grabowski, who encouraged me to take the Reiki I class.  At that time I didn’t really “think” about how I would use Reiki, didn’t take any higher level Reiki classes until many years later and didn’t incorporate it into my life, so I thought…

As I am writing and looking back to 1995, that was the start of the most challenging time of my life.  And whether I realized it or not, the Reiki energy flowed through me while seeing to my father’s care after I found him suffering a heart attack on two different occasions, and for the next 10 years while sitting bedside in hospital and nursing home stays with my mom, then her older sister, then her brother and his wife, then my aunt’s other niece and then with my beloved collie dog, Shane, as I slept with my arm around him on the porch floor all night till his passing.  And as for myself, I find that after four minor surgeries and a knee replacement – without thinking, I instinctively put my hands on the sites of those surgeries to give them healing.

Anyone can learn Reiki regardless of age, background, intelligence or beliefs.  Reiki is a simple technique that is learned in a class taught by a Reiki master who transfers the ability to use Reiki to the student through an attunement.  I encourage anyone who is interested in Reiki to take a beginning class – usually the Level I and Level II classes are taught together in two days.  The class is a combination of lecture, discussion and hands-on experience.  Practice time includes giving and receiving a complete Reiki treatment using all the hand positions, the self-treatment, practice using all the Level II symbols, including distant healing, and practice using different Reiki techniques.  This level of training is great for using Reiki on yourself, your family, friends and pets as I have done for many years.  And these classes are particularly good for those working or volunteering in the health field.  I welcome you to visit our website for class descriptions and to get in “touch” with Bob or me for class dates and locations.  If you’re motivated, we have the tools, the time and you’ll meet Reiki buddies to support you on a most rewarding pathway to harmony.

Always remember, even if we just start out by taking a beginning Reiki class and get the attunement, the Reiki healing energy starts flowing, it never leaves us and is always there for us to access to improve our health and enhance the quality of life.

So, let’s get started!
